Explore El Yunque Rainforest

You can’t miss a chance to visit the El Yunque Rainforest on your trip to Puerto Rico! We will be hiking through the only tropical rainforest in the U.S., visiting national parks, covering 28,000 acres, and driving up to the forest which is over 2,000 feet above sea level.

We begin by driving about 2,000 feet up El Yunque Mountain, giving us incredible views of the forest. And the scenery only gets better from here!

We stop at Yokahu Tower, an observation tower with a panoramic view of the entire forest. Along the way, enjoy views of the river and many wild animals that inhabit the forest, like mongoose, lizards, birds, and more.

We will also be making a stop at La Coca Waterfall, a 150-foot fall that is a seemingly unknown natural oasis tucked away within the forest. The falls boast spectacular views, flowing water, and beautiful swimming holes. This is a great location for pictures, with gorgeous nature views and scenery.

We then embark on a 15-20-minute walk on a trail where we can stop by one of the many rivers and take a nice swim for a chance to cool off.

This family-friendly tour includes educational commentary from Harry, your certified nature guide. He is happy to share the names of trees, flowers, and wildlife as he walks with his guests. He also discusses the landmarks and history of the area, as well as the altitudes of the mountains and waterfalls.

These lands can only be visited three times a week so book your El Yunque tour tickets now and witness this natural beauty for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Our family of 5 including three kids ages 9, 12, and 14 loved our walking tour with Harry. He was very informative and had a handy portable microphone set up so it was easy to hear him. He answered all of our questions and was very pleasant. The tour was just the right amount of time (about 1.5 hrs) and speed and he took us to some spots where we took great photos. We walked about 2-2.5 miles overall during this tour. He even recommended a delicious local place for lunch afterwards. We had a rental car and it was convenient to park at the Dona Fela parking garage a few minutes walk from the meet up spot at Plaza Colon. Thank you, Harry!

I just wanted to thank Max for a wonderful experience. I had wanted to visit the Rainforest without having to do anything too physically intense and this was perfect. He was really patient with the group, played music to keep us energized and introduced us to great food. I am recommending his tour for my sister who is also going to take this tour.I am not sure where to write the review but wanted to acknowledge Max' hard work. He really made the experience fun for all participants even the kiddos. Hope he continues to do a wonderful job with other groups.

One of the best tours I’ve ever taken! In two hours, our guide, Eli, gave us so much information and in such an accessible and fun way that we could not help but learn about the history and culture of this fascinating city. His affection and respect for his country, and of sharing it with others, was very evident. Super knowledgeable and eager to share -he even lingered to answer follow-up questions after the tour was finished. Thank you for a great tour, Eli!

This trip was the perfect amount of time for an afternoon of fun from a good hike, to incredible views, to a fun swim in a local river, it was the cherry on top to my trip to Puerto Rico!

This was a great tour! Eli was so knowledgeable and shared so much about the history and culture of Puerto Rico. I got some amazing photos too! Definitely book this tour. You will get to see soooo many places. Be prepared to walk a lot but it’s well worth it. Bring a portable fan and water…. Thank me later! lol

Eli was an incredible guide: filled with historic information, wonderful stories, and charming interactions. He set a fast pace with both talking and walking, so this tour requires good mobility. But he packed so much into the time we had, I felt I got a real sense of San Juan, of Puerto Rico, and of the factors that have made it what it is today. I highly recommend this tour.

Author: FrequentFlyer93108 | Date: 4/6/2025 | Source: tripadvisor | Rating: 5 stars

The tour was amazing. Like literally THEE BEST part of my trip to Puerto Rico! The history, the sites, THE TOUR GUIDE! I can’t even begin to describe how awesome Eli was! I honestly wasn’t excited for the tour initially. Now that I’ve been on the Old San Juan walking tour with such an awesome tour guide, I’m so grateful for the experience! I will tell everyone about it! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!

This was a great way to learn more about the history of San Juan and Puerto Rico. Eli was an outstanding guide who shared his deep knowledge in a fun and engaging manner. This would be a great tour for anyone aged 8 to 80.

Author: James S | Date: 3/21/2025 | Source: tripadvisor | Rating: 5 stars

We were lucky to get Eli as our tour guide. He was great! Very knowledgeable and he shared many details during the ride to El Yunque as well as while during the hike, stop at the tower, and river. We were looking for a tour with a shorter hike and optional swimming and this was just perfect.

Author: Resort18516121654 | Date: 3/10/2025 | Source: tripadvisor | Rating: 5 stars

We had a knowledgeable, kind and helpful tour guide. It was a beautiful day in a beautiful city with lots of history references in the Old Town tour.

Author: Shari A | Date: 3/9/2025 | Source: tripadvisor | Rating: 5 stars

Nice tour. Just a couple of stops. It’s so much better to have someone else do the driving to see San Juan and visit the Bacardi plant. The tour was relaxed and professional and Harry was an excellent narrator. We arrived at the plaza a couple hours ahead of the tour time and so walked up the hill to enter the Castillo San Cristobal fort run by the U.S. National Park Service. We have Golden Eagle Pass so entry was free. Otherwise, entry is $10. Very nice and definitely worth visiting. There is a short film in the visitors center worth watch about the history of Puerto Rico.

Eli was informative, intelligent, engaging, very great to work with. He knows a lot about old San Juan! Well organized tour.

Author: Steve F | Date: 3/2/2025 | Source: tripadvisor | Rating: 5 stars

It was informative, was a bit disappointed that the tram did not return us to the boarding area. We had an elderly couple in our tour that needed to find assistance to get back

Author: gerry | Date: 2/28/2025 | Source: tripadvisor | Rating: 4 stars

My wife and I had a great time! Eli was the best guide. He was early to pick us up from San Juan, and he made the trip to El yunque was informative and funny. The van was clean and spacious enough. The sights in El yunque were amazing! The hike to Mt. Britton tower was first and is on a paved path. It was steep and did get crowded at times but it was not too intense. My main complaint would be the path is tight so we were looking down to stay on path, which prevented us from fully taking in the views. But we did make multiple stops and Eli explained the flora and gave us time to take pictures and embrace the beauty. The hike was ~1 hour up and down. From there we made stops at another tower, a beautiful waterfall, and the river (no further hiking). These last few stops were all 15-30 minutes but did not feel too rushed. If you plan on swimming in the river wear your suit to the hike as there was nowhere to change. It ended up being about 5 hours start to finish and Eli kept us on schedule. If you are looking for a half day crash course for El yunque that will exert you but not knock you out, I would highly recommend this tour!

Author: Logan S | Date: 2/17/2025 | Source: tripadvisor | Rating: 5 stars

We stayed in a wonderful apt above Anita’s (good gelato) on Fortaleza. Unknown to us, this is the instagram spot in the city. This is ok if the volume could turn down at some reasonable hour. The noise and music keeps you up until it pours or about 3-4 am! But old San Juan is beautiful and historic so it’s worth it for the most part!

Author: Elizabeth A | Date: 2/16/2025 | Source: tripadvisor | Rating: 4 stars

Eli was amazing!!! He was incredibly knowledgeable and super funny. We had a wonderful time. If you go on this tour, go with Eli.

Author: David G | Date: 2/9/2025 | Source: tripadvisor | Rating: 5 stars

Harry was flexible with what we wanted to do/see and gave a great overview of the beautiful rainforest. He was personable and friendly.

Author: Mary B | Date: 2/4/2025 | Source: tripadvisor | Rating: 5 stars

the tour was amazing!!! harry and eli were soo knowledgeable, kind, and engaging. we got to see the best of the sights (la coca falls, mt britton trail, the tower, and more). it was perfect for an intermediate hiker, not too easy but not super hard either. highly recommend!!!

Author: Kendall M | Date: 2/4/2025 | Source: tripadvisor | Rating: 5 stars

Great tour and our guide was very knowledgeable of the area. The only down fall was after the tour. We decided to a restaurant that was recommended by our tour guide, unfortunately we were disappointed with the quality and service of the restaurant.

Author: Karleen M | Date: 1/29/2025 | Source: tripadvisor | Rating: 5 stars

Harry was informative and friendly. The drive is not short but the van was comfortable The forest is beautiful and would happily go back A must see in Puerto Rico

Author: Laura M | Date: 1/28/2025 | Source: tripadvisor | Rating: 5 stars

Old San Juan is a must see when visiting PR. Lots of local history, beautiful architecture, many cool facts. Sometimes our tour guide was a bit hard to understand but we really enjoyed.

Author: Julia J | Date: 1/28/2025 | Source: tripadvisor | Rating: 4 stars

It was nice to be able to get away from the heat of San Juan and we didn’t experience any rain. Unfortunately it was hazy at the Yokahu Tower so we couldn’t see some of the other islands like the U.S. Virgin Islands. The best part was the Mt Britton hike but we weren’t able to go all the way to the Mt Britton tower (not enough time allotted) for any sort of view. Also be advised that the moderate hike to the top may be difficult for people out of shape or elderly. Fortunately there are rest shelters along the way. And because there are no views at the top of this particular stretch of hike it really doesn’t matter. A suggestion might be to allot more time to the hike so you can go all the way to the tower. The final 15-20 minute stop at the river didn’t make sense without being able to swim there. So perhaps that time could be better used for the hike.

Author: E Greer | Date: 1/28/2025 | Source: tripadvisor | Rating: 4 stars

Our tour guide Harry for Old San Juan was very knowledgeable. Our Bacardi Rum tour was fun and Itsy our guide was awesome.

Author: Joyce A | Date: 1/24/2025 | Source: tripadvisor | Rating: 5 stars

A great way to visit El Yunque National Forest from San Juan! We loved that this tour took us inside the actual national forest (the "water slide" tours do not). Scenic stops at the Yokahu Tower, La Coca Falls, and Baño Grande Pool (where we were able to get the national parks passport stamp in the gift shop!), and a nice easy hike on a paved path--about 1.6 miles total, out and back on the first part of the Mt Britton trail, which took under an hour. The roads are steep and twisting, and parking in the park was very limited, so we were so glad we decided to do this tour instead of renting a car, although we would have done a longer hike if we had. Our guide provided some useful context about Puerto Rico and the forest on the way up, too.

Harry was an excellent tour guide and shared history of San Juan as he drove us around Old San Juan. Then we went to the Bacardi Distillery and had the Legacy Tour which was fun and very interesting. It was a great way to spend time in San Juan! I highly recommend Harry!

Despite areas of El Yunque being closed due to flooding, Harry ensured we had a memorable trip to the Rainforest. A great tour if you want to experience the Rainforest without too much hiking!

This was a great experience and I loved everything about this tour. I would recommend to anyone for first time visit. San Juan history is so rich.

Excellent tours, the Guide allowed us to fill ourselves with knowledge and data that we did not know and feel the "warmth" and kindness of Puerto Ricans. I recommend it 100%.

We had a younger woman as our tour guide. She was personable and clearly very passionate about Puerto Rico as a whole. The facts she shared were interesting but not very in depth. I left the tour wishing I had learned a bit more. Overall the walk around the town was pleasant and the perfect length. The food recommendations and stop for ice pops was superb.

Author: Lauren O | Date: 10/6/2024 | Source: tripadvisor | Rating: 4 stars

Very interesting, tolerable walking distances with multiple stops to listen to history. Guide was polite and time efficient.

A fun tour! You get a small taste of the old city, so you can go back and explore more thoroughly. And the Casa Bacardí portion is awesome! Use the time to meet and chat with the other people on the tour - offer them a Cuba Libre! You won’t regret it!

Tour guide was awesome inspite of the he made we were able to make all stops on the old San Juan tour and got us to Bacardi factory tour with enough time for have drinks and a snack. The Bacardi gave a nice history of the rum and its origins.

Harry was an excellent tour guide. I would highly recommend this tour. However, I have a couple of suggestions. It was 95 degrees on our tour. It was supposed to start at 9:30. We got there at 9:20 as suggested, then waited till 9:45 for all to show up. There was a road closer due to a bicycle race, however, our Uber driver had absolutely no issue of where to let us off to walk 2 minutes to the pickup site. So an extra 25 minutes in the heat. Start at 9:30 as tour says as you spent a fair amount at the Columbus monument at the meeting point anyway. We finally left the tour at the fort. This is an icon that all should not miss. However, we did not want to end at the meeting point and then walk 1/2 mile back to the fort in the blistering heat. Our choice I know, My suggestion in the summer unbearable heat is to wander through the old town looking at buildings and hearing the history, then ending at the fort. Most of us are tourists on the tour and take an Uber so it does not matter where we end.

The walking tour of Old San Juan was excellent. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable about the history of Puerto Rico and was willing to answer any questions that people had. I enjoyed seeing/visiting the various places along the way. Not only did we learn a lot about Old San Juan/Puerto Rico, but we also got to see a lot of other features of the current OSJ.

We really enjoyed our walking tour of Old San Juan. The guide was terrific and showed us many historical and cultural landmarks along the tour route. It was so nice to learn a bit about the history of San Juan, and the tour helped us get our bearings for when we returned later during our trip. Two hours was the perfect amount of time for the tour. Note that walking in Old San Juan involves climbing a number of steep hills but is well worth the effort.

Harry is a fantastic guide. He’s knowledgeable and knows just where to go and where to stop. His navigation up the busy, winding roads alone was worth the money paid.

This tour is a must! Harry, our guide, told us all about the area from the minute we were picked up in the van. The rainforest was a sight with it's trees, flowers, waterfalls, towers, etc. We were given more than enough time to explore what we wanted to see. A superb tour.

We were running a few minutes late trying to find parking and our tour guide Harry was extremely helpful, patient and kind. We booked this tour at the last minute and was pleasantly surprised. Harry was very knowledgeable on the history and culture of San Juan. We enjoyed visiting the many churches and iconic areas. The walking tour was not bad at all. I highly recommend this historical tour for first time visitors.

I really appreciate his willingness to answer all sorts of my "silly" questions. Some of the party only spoke english and some only Spanish. The rum distillery tour was wonderful. They were very friendly at Bacardí! The welcome drinks were delicious & well made. We purchased tapas at their stand & WOW! We had the mini alcapurrias & the tostones with crab cups. Delicious!! Our tour guide Christian was informative & funny! The Old San Juan part of our tour was okay. We were kind of put off at the end. The driver didn’t even acknowledge us as we departed. He was too interested in trying to get the other couple to book a tour with him to the rain forest. We didn’t even get a goodbye.

Plan your visit before hand to make sure you cover ground. We had rented car to drive ourselves to the rainforest. We started day little late and reached visitor center by 10AM. Visitor center requires $8 tickets to visit inside. We did not purchase the tickets and drove past visitor center straight to La Coca Falls. Here is where we encountered security who asked us to turn back since park was at capacity and try like in 30 min. There were atleast 2-3 dozen cars all turning back. We turned back and pulled over and overlook area and waited for 15 minutes and joined the queue again to enter the park. This time we got lucky and were allowed inside. 1st stop was the La Coca Falls. It is a great spot, you can get close to falls. Great pic spot. It was raining all throughout the visit so that made it challenging. We decided to drive straight for the peak and stop by other places on the way back. We drove to Torre Mount Britton trailhead and parked here. El Yunque peak and road were both closed. We hiked from Britton to Torre Britton which was also closed. We continued on trail towards Los Picachos, since that was the only choice. Hike is moderate to difficult at places. Gravel and rocks can be slippery and wet. Rain was constant and hard. We carried ponchos which helped us keep dry. We reached the peak, but it being cloudy and rainy we did not get the view at all. But felt great to reach on top and you could only imagine the view from here. Back down was relatively easier. Entire hike took us like 1.5-2 hours with stops and photo ops. On the way down we stopped Bano de Oro, which is great old swimming pool, not in use anymore. Next stop was Juan Deigo falls. This is good hike and strongly recommend water shoes. Area is really small and crowded. Next stop was Torre Yokahu tower. Tower had great views of rainforest and amazing photo place. We got done in about 4.5 hours total. On the way back to Liquillo beach we stopped at place called Mi Vida Cafe which is amazing place with great food,

It was an amazing way to see San Juan and learn about the History of the Island. Our guide Harry was extremely detailed with the history and very patient with our group. The Bacardi Distillery was fascinating with all the history and the details that go into making the many types of Rum. I would highly recommend using a tour virus driving yourself. The traffic is crazy and you can focus in on sightseeing.

Our tour guide was good. He explained the history of Puerto Rico very well and took us to some of the downtown sites. As far as the Bacardi Rum tour, it was not very impressive. It was a tram ride to see a couple buildings. Then we went into another building where that tour guide showed us a video and did some explaining of the rum process making. After that we had a taste test and then had to go through the gift shop.

Our guide shared the history of Old San Juan through interesting stories and factual details. We explored many historical and cultural landmarks along the tour route. This gave us a good overview of the different areas of OSJ, which allowed us to return the following day to confidently explore more on our own.

A fabulous, must do walking tour of Old San Juan! Harry shared great insight about Puerto Rico's history as we walked through the beautiful streets. We learned a lot about the buildings, customs, people and more that make this an amazing island. I also appreciated the impromptu pop quizzes that he gave to help us remember the details (and he shared a lot!). :) I highly recommend taking this tour at the start of your visit so you can get a better overview of the area.

We got to stop at a few different places with the Yokahu Tower, Coca Falls, and this nice little area where you can get food and drinks. We did not get to swim at the natural pool due to heavy rain so it wasn’t safe but we had such a great time and it was quite the adventure. Would recommend doing this if you are wanting to see El Yunque. It’s good to actually go on one of these with a tour guide because the parking there is very limited.

The tour operators were easy to keep in touch with over what's app. Our ship was delayed in customs but they graciously waited for us. Make sure u use the pin drop to find the meeting place as plaza Colon is a busy place. The van ride to the rainforest is about 45 min so that is not a fun part or the tour. The rainforest is beautiful and we had a variety of stops in El Yunque. The group of 14 was a nice size for the tour, we didn't have to wait on too many people. The unfortunate part is that a lot of the sites and trails are closed right now which is not the fault of the tour operator just a bummer for us.

Harry was great all around. He was a great communicator before to ensure our meeting time and place, during to explain history and highlights of the forest, and after to refer us to other restaurants and attractions. The hike he picked was perfect for our family of 7. He was kind and patient while we explored, ate, shopped, took pictures, and hiked. Would definitely recommend.

Harry is very informative and loves this city! Great experience with great views. Left with a lot of knowledge. Tour started promptly at 9:30, though i wouldn’t have minded even an 8am to beat the summer Sun. So happy we got to see the insides of the churches. Great overall experience!

The views were amazing! We took so many photos! We were able to climb a tower and see the rainforest for miles. I've never seen anything like it. We also stopped at a waterfall we could climb and take amazing photos. We stopped for a snack, drinks, and gift shopping at a little area within the rainforest. Finally, we took a 1/4 mile hike into the rainforest and spent an hour in a crystal clear rock river and mingled with the locals who were swimming, sunbathing, and barbecuing. Our transportation was a roomy 14-seater air conditioned van with huge windows that allowed us to see all of the amazing views. Our driver/tour guide was very knowledgeable, friendly, and patient. My family thoroughly enjoyed this tour!

Most of the waterslide El Yunque tours take place outside of the park, and this is one of the few that actually go into the forest. Apparently there are only about 150 permits issued a day, and we saw multiple cars turned away when they got to the checkpoint and were not part of a tour. Our guide Harry was very nice and gave informative talks about the rainforest. The van ride consists of a very winding road, stopping at a tower one could climb for a great view, and later stopping at a waterfall, which was not as impressive as usual because of the near drought weather. However, Harry had a video on his phone to show what the waterfall typically looked like. I was glad I was not doing the driving on the narrow road! The hike down to the river was on a very well maintained path that was easy, but not much to actually look at. There were two separate water holes to swim in at the river with large boulders throughout, but I would have preferred more hiking and less waterhole time. The water was somewhat cool, but overall comfortable. The hiking tour is a bit of a misnomer, as it was more riding in the van or resting in the waterholes. Still, overall nice to see the variety of foliage in the rainforest. Didn't see any animals at all, except for a few birds and a snail.
